The North Region Secondary School Football Festival for children with additional support needs, supported by Inverurie Loco Works FC, was recently held at the Garioch Sports Centre.
Additional support needs bases and special schools from Aberdeenshire and Aberdeen City were all invited to attend and two tournaments were run alongside each other. Anna Ritchie played well to win the special schools tournament after a close final against Bucksburn. Fraserburgh Academy came out on top in the tournament for the additional support needs bases of mainstream schools with the final being contested between two of their sides. Broch 1 edged past Broch 2 courtesy of a penalty shoot out. This was the final tournament of the 2013-14 season and was also the decider for the overall winners. Anna Ritchie won the Special School League with Bucksburn coming second. Fraserburgh won the mainstream ASN League with Cordyce coming close behind. Fraserburgh and Cordyce qualified to attend the Scottish FA National Additional Support Needs Schools League final at Ravenscraig.
The presentation was made by Iain Alexander, the Locos First Team Coach who said “It was lovely to see so much talent displayed today as well as seeing great examples of fair play and sportsmanship”.
Billy Thomson, Locos Secretary and Langstane Account Manager commented, “Inverurie Locos are proud to be associated with this wonderful tournament again and we at Langstane Press were delighted to donate certificates to all the players and help promote the day”.
A special thanks must go to students from Moray College for organising the tournament and officiating on the day.
