Runners find Fyvie course a test

Young athletes from across the North-east descended on Fyvie for the latest series of a cross country running competition.

The event, which was held in the grounds of Fyvie Castle, was attended by hundreds of young runners as part of the North East Schools Cross Country Running Series.

Many of the runners coped well with the challenging course, and follows on from similar events held across the area last year.

The final round of the series takes place at Haddo House on Saturday, March 23, when several of the undecided titles will be up-for-grabs.

The following winners picked up the race prizes, and are now in contention for the overall prizes:

Millie Arnott, Tyrie

Liam Strachan, St Andrews

Millie Watt, Rathen

Connor Forsyth, New Deer

Ruth Rennie, Rathen

Scott Murison, St Andrews

Tamara Simpson, Mintlaw

Jack Buchan, Stuartfield

Lindsay Burnett, Turriff Academy

Iain Williamson, Mintlaw Academy

The schools team titles are still to be decided, with Rathen, Stuartfield, Monquhitter, Tyrie, Maud, Inverallochy, St Andrews, Mintlaw, Rosehearty, and New Deer all preparing to tackle the course at Haddo with the possibility of winning at least one of the team titles.

Active Schools Coordinator for the Peterhead Primary Network area Caitlin Dudley was once again delighted with the turnout of competitors and added: “Our thanks go to the National Trust for Scotland and Fyvie Castle for hosting the race within the grounds and we are all looking forward to a fantastic climax at Haddo next month.

“The efforts of the pupils at all age levels was a great reflection of the ongoing work at schools to not only improve participation levels but to also promote competitive sport in a positive manner.”
