THE International School of Aberdeen held their annual basketball tournament last Saturday with teams invited from around the UK and from as far away as Turkey.
Banchory and Garioch Basketball Clubs were invited to enter a joint team under the name of “Team Scotland” and coaches Fiona McLaren from Garioch and Mike Reilly and Linda Wisely from Banchory were only too pleased to take up the offer.
The tournament was played over two-days with the girls having to play five matches, but with eleven players; six from Banchory and five from Garioch, they were well set for the challenge.
The first game was a thriller against the American School of London which ended in a dramatic draw but after a two-minute period of extra time team Scotland lost by one point.
The girls were playing well though and easy victories followed in their next three games and when the International School of Aberdeen beat the London team the girls had to beat the so far unbeaten ISA in the final game by at least three points to win the tournament.
The game was quite a spectacle with cheerleaders in full uniform chanting their routines, there was loud music and hundreds of spectators creating an atmosphere that the girls had never experienced before. They responded very well though and it was a close game throughout. The teams were level at half time and it was a very close second half but crucial baskets towards the end saw Team Scotland win by four points. It was a jubilant group of Scotland girls who collected the cup and were presented with their medals, a fantastic achievement!
Team Scotland were: Banchory: Georgia Wisely, Rachel Henderson, Meggie Croal, Evie Clepham and Shannon Holt
Garioch: Beth Aitken, Ailis Downie, Hannah Foubister, Katie McLaren and Anna McDonald
