Weekend woe for Ellon and Methlick

Ellon Gordon and Methlick were given batting lessons by Cults and Aberdeen Grammar before both local sides were bowled out cheaply in their respective Grade 1 games.

Ellon were dominated by the Allan Park batsmen who plundered a poor visiting bowling attack for 276 runs for the loss of seven wickets before collapsing to 73 all with only Brian Webb (25) showing any real resistance against the home bowlers.

Saraswat was the pick with a personal haul of five for 21, but given great support by Amman who claimed three for 9, as the Gordon Park side slid to an embarrassing 73 all out, 203 runs short of the home total.

A trip to Aberdeen Links on Saturday when the ruling champions Bon Accord await the struggling Ellon will be viewed with some trepidation by the club and their supporters.

At Lairds there was no joy for Methlick who slumped to fifth place in the league after a 152 run defeat at the hands of Aberdeen Grammar, who clocked up 217 for nine wickets before bowling out the home side for 65.

Coming hard on their great win against Bon Accord the previous weekend the defeat was all the harder to take for the home supporters who will be looking for better things when bottom side Inverurie Don Valley come calling on Saturday.

The ray of hope for the Lairds faithful was the continuing good form of their second team who enjoyed their fourth league win of the season, beating Aberdeen Grammar 3rds at Rubislaw by four wickets.

The home side could only muster 102 runs of which 65 came from the bat of Mark Joy. Jones and Choudry were the destroyers in chief, each claiming three wickets, while Campbell was the top scorer when the visitors batted.

His gutsy 33 helped his side pass the home total with four wickets in hand.

Ellon 2nds game with Dunecht at Ellon was called off due to rain.
