Ythan CC riders Jordan Stronach and Robbie Brown lined up at Stonehaven recently to take on the Jolibar Road Race which incorporated the Aberdeen and District Road Race Championships.
The course started at the beachfront before heading across the Slug towards Banchory which was to lead the riders to the legendary Cairn O’Mount climb. T
he race was to conclude not far from Stonehaven having first descended to Fettercairn before turning North East in what was arguably one of the hardest road races held in Aberdeenshire this year.
Favourable weather conditions greeted the field which remained together until the Cairn when the riders slowly began to fade from the comfort of the bunch. A break of 7 riders pulled away with Stronach holding his place in the main chase group whilst Brown settled into his own rhythm after he was dropped. Brown was not alone as the peloton fragmented on the testing slopes.
The finish saw junior rider Rian Hill (Classic RT) outsprint Dave Griffiths (Glasgow Wheelers) to claim victory with Alister Watt (Granite City RT) finishing 9th to claim the District title. Stronach also contested the sprint in the chasing pack but couldn’t challenge those at the front and finished 21st to cement his growing reputation as one the strongest 16 year old riders in Scotland. Brown rode on bravely to complete the championship race in 43rd place.
