Ythan CC youth rider Fraser Gault travelled to Glasgow last Thursday for the latest round of the WOSCA Youth Race Series at Bellahouston Park aiming to increase his overall lead, writes Malcolm Grant.
Gault tried to push the peloton along by doing much of the work on the front from the start but it was clear that his opponents had a tactical plan to test the series leader and the stalemate remained until the bell went for last lap when Callum Reid (Rock and Road Cycles) broke from the peloton.
Gault led the chase with two more riders on his tail but the Oldmeldrum youth caught Reid before the race slowed with Reid peeling off and Gault marking his rival, moves which allowed the two other riders to re-join the head of the contest.
On the way into the last corner Gault was lying in third with around 400 metres left and despite passing the second placed rider and gaining ground on first he missed out with around a bike wheels length denying him the win.
Second was enough to see Gault maintain his lead with 190 points and a gap of 27 points to the second placed rider with four events to go.
This weekend will see Gault and some of his fellow Ythan QL teammates head to Stirling for the Crit Under the Castle, a popular and impressive event with a full day’s racing in all categories from youth to veteran around the base and grounds of Stirling Castle.
Ythan’s senior riders will be heading to Fordoun on Sunday for the Neish Low 25 mile TT while tonight (Thursday) sees an open session at the swimming pool car park in Ellon for anyone interested in gaining more skills on their bike.
The session, which starts at 7pm will be run by Ythan’s qualified coaching team and is aimed at over 18s who would like to be a bit more confident on their bikes before taking to the road or cycle paths this summer. Coaching will concentrate on braking, cornering skills and gear selection combined with hints and tips for better riding and staying safe on the bike.
